Music sensation, Nerina Pallot shares her beauty secrets…

Singer/songwriter Nerina Pallot talks to us about life as a new mum & the ‘Year Of The Wolf’…

After a busy few years touring and promoting her highly successful previous albums, Nerina Pallot hasn’t taken her foot off the pedal; not only has she been working with the nation’s most treasured sweethearts, Kylie Minogue and Diana Vickers, she’s also found time to become a mother and write a new album in the process. In response to her time carrying and giving birth to her son ‘Wolfie’, Nerina’s fourth studio album, ‘The Year Of The Wolf’ launches today. It’s gracing the airwaves at FU headquarters and Grazia Magazine describe it as “Nerina comes up trumps with this mix of blue-eyed soul and easy listening. It’s a little bit Bacharach, a little bit Wainright (Rufus) and quite butter-meltingly beautiful.”

We caught up with Nerina to talk about her music, pregnancy, how she dealt with the bodily hurdles faced during those 9 months as well as offering some beauty advice for other mums-to-be…

Nerina on pregnancy…

Did you have products that simply you couldn’t have lived without during your pregnancy? If so, which ones?
“Body Oil – I swear by smothering myself in it every day after a shower stopped me from getting any stretch marks (one of the best was Maison Boo Body Bootique Organic Stretch Mark Oil). As my skin changed a lot in pregnancy, I found switching to a tinted moisturizer really handy as I don’t like wearing foundation except for evenings or if I have to do telly or photos. Clarins Super Restorative Tinted Cream literally stopped me from looking all blotchy!”

What was the best thing about being pregnant?
“Being able to eat my weight in bakewell tarts and sleep during the day and not feel too guilty!”

What products did you use for a pick-me-up?
“Apart from bakewell tarts, a quick spritz of Clarins Eau Dynamisante Invigorating Fragrance and some Kiehl’s lip balm kept me going. A bit of Benefit’s Bathina Body Balm was my one nod to glamour.”

Do you use products on Wolfie? If so, which ones?
“Apart from good old fashioned Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Tear Free Shampoo and Body Wash, I don’t tend to use anything on him because he has such beautiful baby skin. A bit of sun screen when we’re out and about (love JASON Earth’s Best Organic Mineral Based Sunblock SPF 30+). I also like Weleda Baby Calendula Lotion for nappy rash and soothing Wolfie’s skin.”

How did you get back into shape after giving birth?
“Um, I think I’ve got quite a way to go before I am in any shape like I was before I had my boy… but, I tried to stay active during pregnancy and went back to running after about 12 weeks. If I can’t get out for a run, I take Wolfie for a really long walk and jog part of the way. That way it doesn’t feel like exercise, just time with my baby.”

Did you have any miracle-working product that helped you with tone up and get back into shape?
“Nope. Please someone share with me a get-in-shape miracle because I want to know!”

Any tips for new mums?
“Sleep when your baby is sleeping. Forget errands, washing up, housework, just sleep as much as you can when you can. On the other hand, while I don’t think you should have a military style routine, it does wonders for your self esteem to be up and dressed and with a little bit of make-up on by 10am if you can; just to face the day. Even if all you plan to do is stay home with baby and nap when you can!”

3 things that make you smile about being a new mummy?
“When my son smiles. How a good day is if I manage to get out the door with hair AND make-up done and no baby food all over my clothes. The fact that I no longer want to spend a fortune on posh shoes but save it all to spend on baby toys!”

Nerina on tour…

What keeps you going on tour?
“Chocolate, rosé wine and pure adrenaline.”

Best stay-put products when you’re on stage?
Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil is great as a top layer face powder. It keeps everything matte but not dull and it sparkles. Benefit BADgal Waterproof Mascara is incredible. Never runs, however it’s hard to take off after!”

What’s the inspiration for your new album?
“Just the joy of making music, but mostly the joy and excitement of having my first child. It’s named after him.”

What sounds can we expect to hear in your new songs?
“Oooh, there’s a whole kitchen sink of instruments on there; strings, brass, drums, guitars, pianos – you name it. It’s organic but I think some bits of it are quite sweeping and epic. We recorded a lot of it live so it sounds real, I think.”

Favourite things to do on your day off?
“Go for a long walk with my husband and son and our dogs. Watch football, cook a huge supper and just hang out at home.”

We all have those forever favourite staples in our beauty cabinets! What are yours at the moment?
Clarins Instant Light Brush-On Perfector and Daniel Sandler Concealer. Cannot live without those. Plus Clarins Beauty Flash Balm which is the best for everything. It’s like a facelift in a packet!!”

What makes you feel unique?
“I think the people who surround me; family, friends, animals – those relationships are unique and the dearest things in life to me. Being my son’s Mum – nobody else can do that for him. It makes me feel special, and best of all, needed.”

‘Year Of The Wolf’ is now available across music stores nationwide.
